Oktoberfest and 5K trail Race @ SML

The Willard Companies, in conjunction with the Smith Mountain Lake YMCA, present the third annual Oktoberfest and 5K Trail Race/Walk, Saturday, Oct. 3 at Westlake Towne Center in Moneta. The 5K Trail Race/Walk will start at 10:30 a.m. and the Oktoberfest festival will follow from 12 noon-5 p.m.

Smith Mountain Lake Home Tour

On Columbus Day weekend, October 9-11, visitors may tour eight beautiful lakeside residences, which range from a comfy cottage to a 9,000-square foot stately home. Five of the homes are located in Franklin County and three are in Bedford County. The Smith Mountain Lake Charity Home Tour is the only event in the nation that visitors can access tour homes by car or by boat. It offers tour visitors many great ideas for decorating, remodeling and landscaping, as well as a look at lake-living lifestyles.

Annual Franklin County JAKES Event

Bring your kids to have a fun filled day of learning about conservation, sportsmanship, and the Wild Turkey! JAKES (Juniors Acquiring Knowledge, Ethics and Sportsmanship), presented by the Franklin County Longbeards chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF), returns for its 16th year. The event, which has been honored on both the state and national levels, will be held Saturday, October 10 from 8 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. at Waid Recreation Area in Rocky Mount. JAKES will feature a day’s worth of activities for youth up to age 17. Attendees will have the opportunity to participate in archery, trapping, canoeing, still-target shooting, sling shooting, a driving demo, pellet shooting, fishing, turkey calling and other activities. They will also learn about shooting safety and hunting laws.

Johnny CASA 5K & 5 Miler Family Fun Run-Walk

The tenth annual Johnny CASA 5K & 5 Miler Family Fun Run-Walk will be held Saturday, Oct. 10 at 8:30 a.m. This year’s race is designed to incorporate a festive, family-oriented Halloween theme into the historic traditional model of the race. The 5-mile run and the 5k run are designed for runners of all skill levels. The course passes through the scenic vistas and rolling terrain of historic uptown Rocky Mount. Those who are not runners can walk the 5k portion of the course.
