Legacy of the Land

Join a ranger-led walking tour of the Park's historic area and find out about the people and events that have transformed this former tobacco farm into a historic, cultural landscape.

Booker T. Washington National Monument was authorized into existence by President Dwight D. Eisenhower on April 2, 1956.  This momentous event occurred approximately 100 years after Booker T. Washington's birth as a slave on the same land, which in 1856 was known as the Burrough's Plantation.  A lot of interesting and exciting history has occurred on the land as this former slave-holding tobacco farm transformed into the historical, cultural landscape and National Park that it is today.

Join park ranger Timothy Sims at the park visitor center to begin a walking tour of the historic area and learn about people and events that have played an important role in creating the Legacy of the Land.  Find out what happened to the Plantation's inhabitants afther the Civil War.  Learn who was interviewed to reveal where things were and how they looked in the late 1800's.  Hear the story of how Washington's daughter played a vital role in the eventual creation of this National Park....and lots more!

Everyone is invited to attend this program!  The tour will be outside so please dress appropriately  for the weather.  Call ahead in case of inclement weather conditions.
