Bird Walk on Jack-O-Lantern Branch Trail

Hardy, VA - Take advantage of abundant birding resources and spring migration at Booker T. Washington National Monument by participating in a bird watch with fellow birders and experienced guides on Saturday, May 10th at 8:00 a.m. The walk will begin in the visitor center parking lot. It will pass through the historic farm area, and along the mile-and-a-quarter Jack-O-Lantern Branch Trail. Exploring off-trail fence rows and field edges may be included as well.

Booker T. Washington National Monument is comprised of 239 acres of forests, open woodland and meadow, hayfields, pastures, demonstration crop fields and heirloom gardens. The Monument presents a plantation landscape from the 19th century. It is in this setting that Booker T. Washington’s life and legacy are interpreted. The Jack-O-Lantern Branch Heritage Trail, designated as part of the National Recreation Trail System in 1981, allows pedestrian access to many of the cultural and natural resources located within the Monument, including a rich abundance and diversity of wildlife habitat. Booker T. Washington National Monument is part of the Virginia Birding and Wildlife Trail’s Mountain Area.

All are invited to attend the morning bird walk. The walk will be of moderate length and move along at a relaxed pace with frequent stops along the way. The walk should take approximately one and a half to two hours. Appropriate clothing, footwear, binoculars, field guide, and a water bottle are encouraged. Several up-hill climbs and uneven terrain will be encountered. Inclement weather may be a considering factor. In case of uncertain weather or for more information about the hike, please call (540) 721-2094.

Last Child in the Woods - Book Club

Hardy, VA - “Go outside and play!” How many of us remember hearing those words as we were growing up? How many children today are able to play outside and experience nature? Research shows that more than ever before, children today are not experiencing nature and playing outdoors and participating in outdoor activities like the generations before them. Author Richard Louv addresses “nature deficit disorder” among children today in his book “Last Child in the Woods”.

The Booker T. Washington National Monument Book Club will review “Last Child in the Woods” and discuss Louv’s theory of children’s disconnect with nature on Saturday, May 10th at 2:00 p.m. The Book Club meets in the visitor center auditorium.

All are welcome to attend. Bring a friend and join us!
