Tears of Freedom

Hardy, VA - How did the debate on slavery and the Civil War affect the slave-holding farms   and plantations in the South?  How did the slaves and slave-owners react to the creation of the Confederacy and the Civil War?  How did the Emancipation Proclamation affect people living in the Confederate States of America?

At 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 17, Park Ranger Tim Sinclair will lead a group of visitors through the Burroughs Plantation to discuss the causes and effects of the Civil War and how people on the home front viewed this war. The Tears of Freedom program will offer the public the opportunity to discuss the anticipation, celebration, and apprehension felt in the hearts of men, women, and children during those days surrounding freedom.  We will be examining the era as explained by Dr. Booker T. Washington in his autobiography Up From Slavery.  Please join us as we embrace the emotions of the people on this plantation during April of 1865.

Join Tim Sinclair in the visitor center as the Booker T. Washington National Monument  continues to put a face on slavery.  All are invited to attend. No reservation is required. For more information, contact the Booker T. Washington National Monument at (540) 721-2094.
