A geographic information system utilizes base maps developed from aerial photography. The town already has the base maps along with 2-foot contour topographic and plane metrics (building and road outlines). The GIS Technician/Code Inspector is responsible for locating and marking various infrastructure in the field, using global positioning satellite (GPS) hand-held units. The GPS unit designates plane coordinates to be downloaded into the base map and the information can be made available in many layers. A particular layer of information may be needed depending on the user and purpose. Examples of layers would include tax parcel mapping, zoning and land use, special use permits, water and sewer lines, other utility poles, stormwater structures, curbs, water meters, valves, manholes, police service calls, and garbage collection stops. This information can be a wealth of use in the future for tax billing, emergency services, utility location and planning, economic development, transportation planning, land use and zoning, and neighborhood redevelopment.
The GIS Technician/Code Inspector is available to support other functions of the Community Development Department, including erosion and sediment control inspections, code enforcement, site plan review, and planning and zoning. GIS also plays an important role in our economic development plan, providing mapping for developers to assist in site plans, mapping utilities for planning and maintenance, and project inspection services.
