Police Department

The Rocky Mount Police Department is currently made up of a Chief of Police supervising three divisions: patrol, investigations and records. 

The patrol lieutenant oversees one patrol sergeant for each of four shifts, eight police officers, and a school resource officer. Each shift also has an officer trained in community policing and crime prevention. 

In the investigations division, the investigations lieutenant oversees investigations into a variety of crimes, focused on preventing narcotics, gang and other high-profile criminal activity in the Town of Rocky Mount. 

The Records division consists of a records supervisor and records clerk, who enter data on wanted criminals, criminal activity, traffic and accident data and other records compiled by the police department and reported to state and federal agencies.

The Police Department is responsible for patrol duties throughout the corporate limits, working with citizens in neighborhood watch programs, investigations of criminal activities, arresting criminal offenders, providing testimony in criminal trials, issuing citations, code enforcement, parking enforcement on public streets and parking lots, traffic control and signalization, education and crime prevention, and other matters related to public safety. The Police Department also assists other area law enforcement agencies by participating in truancy prevention and intervention programs with Franklin County Public Schools, participation in a regional drug task force with the Franklin County Sheriff's Office, Special Weapons and Tactics (S.W.A.T.) Team, and various safety and crime prevention programs with the Virginia State Police. The Rocky Mount Police Department is devoted to the concept of community policing and encourages its officers to become involved in community activities and creating a forum of trust with our business persons and neighborhood residents.
The Department is represented annually at career fairs and always makes an effort to hire highly qualified and educated persons. All sworn employees receive training at the Cardinal Criminal Justice Academy in Salem, Virginia. The Department offers a competitive starting salary, paid retirement, paid health/life insurance and  twelve vacation days a year.
The Mission of the Rocky Mount Police Department, in cooperation with the community, is to deter crime and the fear associated with it, and to address issues that affect the quality of life in the town. Our mission is accomplished within the legal and moral standards of our community.
The clearance rate for Uniform Crime Reporting Statistics in the Town has been substantially higher than the state average for the past seven years.
The Department embraces the community-policing concept, which encompasses including citizens in crime prevention and detection efforts.
The Department does traffic enforcement and is equipped with radar for speed detection. This enforcement is often done during peak traffic times and is supplemented by federal and state grant funding.
The Department participates in a joint SWAT team that also includes members from the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office.
