Town of Rocky Mount Promotes Erik Mollin to Chief of Police
Mollin is a native of Hamden, Connecticut, but has resided in Franklin County since 1985. He enrolled in Ferrum College in 1991, earning a Bachelors of Science degree in 1995, majoring in Environmental Science, and earning a minor in Criminal Justice. During his academic work, he participated in an internship with the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries Enforcement Division within Franklin County. He was hired as a police officer for the Town of Rocky Mount in October of 1997. He has since participated in specialized training programs including Narcotics Investigations, Homicide Investigations, Special Reaction Team Training, Hostage Rescue, Investigators' School, Community Oriented Policing, and Interview and Interrogations. He is certified as a general instructor and fireams instructor for the Department of Criminal Justice Services and has been invlolved in teaching basic recruits and veteran officers at both Cardinal Criminal Justice Academy and Piedmont Criminal Justice Academy. He has held positions with the police department including patrol officer, narcotics task force officer, SWAT team member, scuba team member, Investigator, patrol Sergeant, and most recently Acting Chief of Police since October 2006. Mollin participates in the VDGIF Hunter Education program as a volunteer instructor. In addition, he volunteers with the annual Franklin County Jakes Event.
"Erik has done an outstanding job over the past 10 months as the Acting Chief and has worked to improve all aspects of public safety and law enforcement in the Town of Rocky Mount," said Town Manager C. James Ervin. "I think that he has the judgement, patience, and law enforcement experience needed to make a great Police Chief for the Town of Rocky Mount."
Erik's prioroties include increasing the use of "community policing" methods that develop more communication and involvement between the community and the police department, pursuing the accreditation of the Rocky Mount Police Department, and working to promote safety for the community through crime prevention and traffic management.
"I am excited at the chance to lead the Town of Rocky Mount's Police Department," said Erik. "The department is made up of dedicated and loyal officers. I look forward to working with the Town Manager and the Council to make Rocky Mount a safe and enjoyable community."
