Rocky Mount Assistant Town Manager/Community Development Director Position Filled

Hankins currently serves as the City of Martinsville director of communications, legislative affairs, and baseball operations.
An award-winning former newspaper editor, public relations professional, and House of Delegates legislative aide, Hankins has a wide variety of skills across a number of governmental and public relations disciplines.  The Town's administration considers his skills to be a perfect fit for the growing community.
"We have an excellent staff of dedicated professionals, and adding Matt Hankins as our Assistant Town Manager will help us focus our efforts in customer service, planned development and economic expansion," said James Ervin, Rocky Mount Town Manager.  "He brings to our table a sense of excitement about this community, a talent for taking on a variety of responsibilities and challenges, and optimism for Rocky Mount's potential."
Hankins joined Martinsville in late 2001 as its public information officer, managing the city's public information, media relations, website and television channel.  The city has increased his responsibilities over the years, adding cable franchise management, legislative affairs and legislative program development, and oversight of the city's pre-professional baseball team, the Martinsville Mustangs.
While he has been dedicated to serving Martinsville, Hankins looks forward to his new work.
"I look forwad to a series of new challenges in Rocky Mount," Hankins said. "Town council and Mr. Ervin have a great vision for the community," and I look forward to facilitating that vision."
Hankins is a 1994 graduate of Emory & Henry College with a degree in history education and a minor in mass communications.  He is president-elect of the college's 9,000-plus member Alumni Association, and was the association's 2002 Young Alumnus of the Year.  He is a member of the Blue Ridge Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America, and has experience as a volunteer firefighter.
Hankins is the oldest of four sons of Charles and Mary Hankins of North Tazewell, Virginia, and he has three children.
