Rocky Mount To Offer Regular Bulk Trash Pick-Up
Va. – Residents of the Town of
Starting February 4, the Rocky Mount Public Works Department will pick up large items and brush on the first Monday of every month. The service is only available to residential customers of the town.
Residents should set out their bulk items by 7 a.m. on that first Monday. Examples of bulk trash include appliances, furniture or other such items that cannot be picked up by standard garbage trucks.
Rocky Mount Town Council approved the new program at its January meeting.
“Council believes the most efficient way to collect this type of debris is to have a regular day every month,” said Town Manager James Ervin. “Having a regular pick-up date means our staff can concentrate its efforts in other areas, rather than having to make smaller runs throughout the month.”
Ervin urged residents to wait until close to the first Monday to put bulk items at the curb.
“We want to do everything to keep our community clean, and we don’t want to have used furniture, appliances or piles of brush on the curb for three weeks waiting for the first Monday,” Ervin said.
On the rare occasion when the first Monday of the month falls on a holiday, bulk trash will be collected the next day. For example, Labor Day this September 1 will be a Monday, and New Year’s Day and Independence Day can also fall on Monday.
The new program does have limits in addition to its residential nature.
Contractor spoils (brick, concrete, roofing shingles, and any material resulting from construction for which a contractor has received payment) may not be disposed of via large item pickup.
Brush must be set aside in a separate pile from large items for pickup. Tree limbs, brush, and hedge trimmings will not be picked up if the resident paid a contractor to perform the service. Either the contractor or homeowner must dispose of this material through another means than large item pickup.
No hazardous materials or other debris not accepted at the landfill will be picked up. Examples of materials NOT allowed are gasoline, oil, batteries, paint, acid, tires or other hazardous materials.
