Town Hires New GIS, Code Enforcement Technician

The Town of Rocky Mount Community Development Department has hired a Franklin County native as its new GIS and Code Enforcement Technician.

Nathan J. Wright of Hardy will assume the post effective March 12, 2008. He replaces Thomas Furcron, who accepted a GIS position with Franklin County in January. Wright will report to the Community Development Department directed by Assistant Town Manager Matt Hankins.

Wright will handle mapping duties for the town and manage its Geographic Information System, will investigate code violations and property maintenance issues within the Town and will manage the Town’s state-mandated Erosion & Sedimentation Program. He will also work with Town Planner Paul Stockwell on a variety of planning projects and represent the Town on the BUD Commission, which plans and plants gardens alongside roadways within the Town.

GIS can be used for a number of applications, from mapping water and sewer lines to tracking business licenses and finding water loss, resulting in revenue increases for the Town. Code enforcement duties include receiving, investigating, and following up on violations of the Town Code to bring residents and businesses into compliance with that code. The erosion and sedimentation program ensures that local streams are not polluted by dirt washing off of construction sites.

A graduate of Franklin County High School and Old Dominion University, Wright spent part of his formative years as a resident of Byrd Lane in Rocky Mount.

“We are pleased to be able to bring aboard not only a bright, energetic young man with the training and interest necessary to do this complex professional work, but also a man who wants to return to his home in order to pursue his career,” said Hankins. “I welcome Nathan to our professional staff, and look forward to seeing the work he does to help the entire community.”

“The Town of Rocky Mount is a great organization and is doing great work,” Wright said. “I’m just so pleased that I can pursue my chosen field here, and help continue the progress of the community.”
