Rocky Mount to expand recycling site
Rocky Mount residents who want to recycle can use the Walmart recycling site.
Town council has agreed to expand the site and buy a bin for the recycling of plastic materials.
The Walmart site currently accepts aluminum cans and newspapers for recycling.
Town council was recently asked by a citizen to place recycling bins within the town limits.
Town Manager James Ervin said that Larry Moore, who oversees the recycling operation for Franklin County, said the existing Walmart recycling site could be expanded if the town paid for additional containers (estimated at $800 each).
Moore also said the county would service a new recycling center if such a facility were to be constructed by the town.
Ervin said that a new recycling center would cost an estimated $4,800 to develop.
Suitable locations could be found on existing town land, including the municipal building, the triangle of land across from the depot and other sites.
Town council approved Ervin's recommendation that the town work with the county to expand the Walmart site, while working to advertise that site to town residents and keeping the development of an alternate site as a future option.
