Rocky Mount farmers' market is part of national online contest

Shopping at the Rocky Mount farmers' market isn't the only way to support the market.

Shoppers can now vote for the market in a national online contest.

American Farmland Trust is conducting an online competition to discover the best of America's 4,685 farmers' market.

To vote for the Rocky Mount market, go to the farmland.org website and vote before Aug. 1.

The goal of the contest is to promote the connection between fresh, local food and the farms that supply it.

In addition to national recognition, the top markets -- one small, one medium and one large -- will receive free "No Farms, No Food" tote bags for use at their sites.

There are more than 150 farmers' markets across Virginia.

The contest will "better educate the public about buying local food and other products," said Keith Kendall, manager of the Eastern Orange County Market.

"People are often unaware of the difference in quality of locally grown food," he said.

Farmers' markets give people a sense of community.

"Customers like making friends with the people who grow the food," said one market manager.

By shopping at farmers' markets, he said, consumers begin to understand the connection between farmers and fresh, safe, healthy food for their families, he said.
