The Rocky Mount Water Department is responsible for maintaining the water distribution system and storage tanks to our customers. The Town currently has approximately 2,700 connections, including residential, commercial, institutional and industrial users. These lines range in size from 2" service lines to 24" main lines, covering approximately 550,000 linear feet. Some of this system lies outside the corporate limits. Whenever Public Works employees, vehicles or equipment are used in servicing these lines, these costs are booked against this account to accurately reflect the true costs of providing utility service to the users. Fees are charged each month based upon consumption readings to cover the costs of providing this service.
Aside from service lines, the Town is also responsible for the maintenance of seven water storage tanks with a capacity of over 2.8 million gallons. Tanks are located on US 220 North, US 220 South, Scuffling Hill Road, Pendleton Avenue (2 tanks), Bald Knob, and Grassy Hill. In Fiscal Year 2006, a new 500,000 gallon tank was put into service on the crest of Grassy Hill, and is known as the Landmark tank. This tank has the capacity of 500,000 gallons and ability to provide the Rocky Mount/Franklin County Industrial Park with high water pressure and additional capacity for future use.
